School - Upper School Subjects
General Aims: Biology develops an understanding of the ways in which nature functions, how we interact with it and some of the effects human actions can have. This subject should be seen both as an integral part of a general education and as a useful preparation for scientific, medical and related vocations.
The course aims to help individual students to develop:
- Scientific understanding of the living world.
- Mental and motor abilities appropriate to the acquisition and use of biological understanding.
- Appreciation of the products and influences of science and technology, balanced by a concern for their wise application.
- Understanding of the nature and limitations of scientific activity.
- Ability to apply biological understanding to appropriate problems (including those of everyday life) and to approach those problems in rational ways.
- Respect for evidence, rationality and intellectual honesty.
- Capacities to express themselves coherently and logically, both orally and in writing, and to use appropriately, modes of communication characteristic of scientific work.
- An ability to work effectively with others.
Students will find themselves actively involved in formulating hypotheses, discussion groups and practical work when participating in this course. Some practical work will also be carried out in the field of aquaculture.
Biology is a useful subject for students who wish to understand the living world and the nature of scientific processes. Students will explore major concepts related to survival of cells, organisms, species and ecosystems.
Biology E402 focuses on interaction between living things and their environment and considers environmental aspects related to management of ecosystems. It involves practical work in the laboratory and in the field, both of which are considered essential components of the subject. Biology is valuable for students interested in scientific and related vocations. It also provides a useful background for those interested in current environmental issues.
In Year 12, students will study four different modules to those described in the Year 11 Biology course structure.
Year 11 – D402
Prerequisite: Level 5 in Life and Living Strand in Year 10
Homework / Home Study Requirements: A minimum of 3 hours per week.
Year 12 – E402
