FROM SAMURAI TO SONY:  A Society in Change

Using the context of Japan’s rapid transition from a traditional society to a modern world leader, this Unit investigates the role of groups creating and wielding power in societies.  Understanding the ups and downs of Japan’s road to a fair and just society will help in understanding our world today.

This turbulent two centuries in Japan sweeps from the feudal samurai of the Tokugawa period, through the revolutionary upheavals of the Meiji Restoration, to the dark valley of military rule, World War II and the atom bomb and the economic miracle of corporate modern Japan.

History is an attempt to interpret the past in order to gain insight into the present.  Using evidence from multi-media, cartoons, documents and text material students will build strong communication and interpretive skills.  These skills are of great value in developing independent learning and research skills which are essential in all fields of tertiary education.

The study of History is useful for students wishing to pursue a career in journalism, law, teaching, business, tourism, industrial relations, politics and diplomacy, archaeology and all fields of human services.

HITLER, FASCISM AND NAZI GERMANY

Why were 200,000 people in New South Wales prepared to join a violent and shady political group intending to overthrow the elected State government in 1931?  They were influenced by one of the twentieth century’s most dramatic historical movements – Fascism.

From the ashes of World War l in Germany Adolf Hitler built the Nazis into a monstrous power controlling first Germany and then Europe, unleashing the Second World War and the Holocaust.  This study of cause and consequence provides a chilling warning from the past.
