School - Upper School Subjects
This subject is designed to provide students with knowledge of the western musical tradition from the Baroque period to the 20th Century. It is a subject that involves exploration of the fundamentals of solo and ensemble performance, composition, aural skills and the history of western music. The subject consists of three sections: Students are required to study Section I and select either Section II or Section III.I. Perception (aural work), Composition (melody writing, harmonisation, orchestration) and Literature of Music (aural recognition, analysis, terminology and history).
II. Performance (instrumental/vocal) where students are required to participate in ensemble music (eg Symphonic Wind Ensemble, Jazz Band, Vocal Ensemble) in addition to their solo performance.
III. An approved project in music.
Students should be aware that an accompanist will be needed for the following:
• Public performance
• End of semester examination
The obtaining of an accompanist is the student's responsibility and certain costs will be incurred which will need to be met by parents/guardians. However, in certain circumstances there is an avenue to apply for support in this area through the Teacher in Charge of Music.
