School - Upper School Subjects
Visual Communication – Photography caters for students with a wide variety of interests. For most students, the course will provide for a possible leisure time activity, which is both interesting and challenging. Others will use their photographic skills in studies at tertiary institutions, while for some the course will pave the way to further studies, which will prepare them as Photographers in industry.2005 saw the Photography facility at B.S.H.S. move from an undesirable transportable classroom into the new Arts complex at the front of the school. The subject is now taught in a modern, well-equipped classroom which boasts compact and SLR digital cameras, professional inkjet printers, film scanner, flatbed scanners and fast computers with CD burners. There is also a separate studio area equipped with professional lighting equipment and backdrops. Although darkroom facilities are no longer available students can still use film cameras and develop their B & W films.
The new, exciting era of digital photography is enabling students to experiment and develop their own ideas and styles in this field of visual communication. Although the ‘image’ is captured digitally on a sensor rather than on film, all of the traditional techniques and theoretical aspects still apply and are covered in both courses.
For each task, students are required to research and plan before they take photographs. This gives them an insight into what is involved in photographing specific subjects and themes and gives them a much greater chance of completing the task successfully. Each student evaluates their own work before assessment by the teacher. There are 8 tasks to be completed in each year.
Topics covered include: camera systems, design & analysis, photographic history, macro photography, still life, portraiture, sports, landscapes, architecture, fashion and an analysis of visual design concepts.
Year 11 – D283
Year 12 – E283
Desirable: Successful completion of a lower school photography unit.
