School - Upper School Subjects
Outdoor Education Course of Study 1A and 1B are challenging, exciting and interesting courses which are open to all students who enjoy physical activity and experiencing the outdoors. The focus of 1A and 1B are to experience and face challenges in the outdoors and encourages students to step outside their comfort zone.
Students are introduced to outdoor activities where they can develop and improve their technical skills and apply appropriate practices to ensure safe participation. They understand basic planning and organisational requirements necessary for them to participate in positive and safe short duration excursions/expeditions in selected outdoor activities. They begin developing skills in roping and navigation and understand the basics behind different modes of travel.
Students are introduced to personal skills and interpersonal skills, including self awareness, communication and the identification of leadership qualities.
They are introduced to local natural environments, and examples of local environmental management and ‘leave no trace’ principles and their existing relationship with nature.
The Outcomes which will be covered are;
- Outcome 1: Understanding the Principles of Outdoor Education
- Outcome 2: Skills for safe participation in outdoor activities
- Outcome 3: Understanding the environment
- Outcome 4: Self-management and interpersonal skills in outdoor activities
Students will be required to participate in at least one single day excursion and an overnight expedition in a natural environment for each unit.
Prerequisite: Level 5 in most Physical Education strands in Year 10
Desirable: A year 10 background in Outdoor Education and a reasonable standard of swimming would be an advantage.
Homework / Home Study requirements: Up to 3 hours per week (this may include some extra-curricular activities.
