Music

School - Programs

Busselton Senior High School was announced as a specialist music school in 2008. We are the only school outside of the Perth metropolitan area to achieve this status and is a validation of the incredibly successful music program the school has developed under the stewardship of the music teachers and Arts Learning Area.

Middle Schooling

School - Programs

Busselton Senior High School was established in 1958 and has served the community fantastically well for nearly fifty years. It has fine traditions established by the various student bodies over this time and a loyal and dedicated staff. The challenge for the whole community is to plan for educational change in a rapidly changing and growing community and to provide educational relevance and opportunities for students within the town. At the same time the traditions and history of the school need to be honoured and preserved for all those countless students who have gone before.

Vocational Education & Training

School - Programs

VET Programs
One of the fastest growing areas of education in high schools are the Vocational Educational and Training (VET) Programs. These programs provide for students who are employment or TAFE bound.  Students who participate in these Programs become a far more employable and productive member of the workforce and better prepared to pursue further study in a wide range of fields.

Qualifications
Students successfully completing a VET Program will be able to gain Secondary Graduation and attain Australia-wide accreditation with the completion of Training Package Competencies.

Busselton Senior High School is a Registered Training Provider and is therefore able to accredit nationally recognised Competencies to students in VET Programs.  In this area the school has the same recognition as TAFE colleges.  Students in Business Studies, Manufacturing Industries Studies, Recreation Industry Studies, Service Industry Studies and Marine and Outdoor Recreation Studies can be accredited by the school with Competencies and Certificates up to Level II.  A list of the competencies offered by each program is available on application.

The Certificate qualifications form a major part of the selection criteria for competitive TAFE courses.

Structured Workplace Learning (SWL)
An integral part of all the VET programs is Structured Workplace Learning (SWL).  SWL is undertaken one day a week in local businesses. SWL experience is highly valued by prospective employers and TAFE Colleges.  Students must undergo an interview to determine their readiness for work and therefore their eligibility to complete the SWL course.

Outcomes
Last year was a very successful year for VET. Blake Elliot was a district finalist in the VET Student of the Year Award. Our VET program was ranked eleventh in the state for high achievement of Qualifications and 100% of VET students achieved graduation.

Cost of VET Courses
VET courses offer many opportunities, experiences and resources. Parents and students need to check the cost of participating in the course prior to enrolling. Parents pay a 50% deposit on charges to qualify for a workplace readiness interview.

More Information about VET
To seek more information about VET courses, feel welcome to contact the VET Curriculum Coordinator – Brian Pusey or any of the Coordinators listed in the course descriptions.

Manufacturing Industries

School - Programs

This popular course provides students with a broad base of employable skills in the Building and Construction, Metals Fabrication and Engineering, Furniture Production, Drafting and Automotive areas which prepares them for apprenticeships and traineeships and employment in associated industries.

The students also learn about the world of work and are equipped with skills to make the transfer between secondary school and employment a smooth transition. In addition to the subjects listed below, students are given the opportunity to complete national qualifications in the form of a Certificate I MEM10198 in Engineering a Certificate II in Engineering Production MEM20198 and a Certificate I in Automotive.

The students gain a wealth of knowledge and experience through their involvement in the Structured Workplace Learning Program. This means that they spend 4 days a week at school and one day a week in the workplace. This course has been responsible for a huge number of students from this school who are currently a successful part of our workforce.

Business Studies

School - Programs

This popular course provides students with extremely valuable skills and experience to pursue a very wide range of careers. It offers a pathway to employment and/or further training at TAFE (or even university at a later date) in a range of vocational areas.

Skills developed are suited to any work situation with students using the latest software and administration techniques. These skills can then be applied to any work environment. Students have the opportunity to gain experience in a range of industry areas through Structured Workplace Learning, thus leaving career options open whilst developing a sound skill base. Students take up work placement in diverse fields – from retail (fashion, surf-wear, pharmacy), office administration and record keeping, interior design, travel, teacher assistant, hairdressing, landscape design, graphic design, information technology and tourism, to front office reception. This enables students to tailor the course to best suit their own careers aspirations.

Students work towards Secondary Graduation and the Certificate II in Business Services BSB20101. This nationally recognised qualification will greatly enhance prospects for entry into a range of TAFE courses. Students exit this program with very good employment prospects, valuable life skills and a wealth of experience in the workplace. This gives them a very wide range of options for their future employment, study or training.

Recreation Studies

This exciting vocational course offers students scope to develop a range of skills and abilities within the field of recreation, fitness and business or any work which requires physical fitness.  The course offers a nationally recognized qualification, a Certificate II in Sport (Coaching), as well as a WACE Certificate (Secondary Graduation) and Structured Workplace Learning. Students will also be given the opportunity to gain many recognized certificates such as Senior First Aid, Bronze Medallion and Level 1 Sports Specifics.

Students enrolled within the course will be involved in activities such as fitness testing and analysis, specific sports, camping, coaching, umpiring, computing, team building, active after school program, nutrition, ecology and canoeing.

Involvement in this course provides students with opportunities for employment and/or further training at TAFE or university as well as providing them with many extremely valuable life skills.

Service Industires

School - Programs

The Service Industries Studies course has been running for 10 years. This year we are running the course over 12 months offering a full Certificate I in Hospitality (Kitchen Operations). There is also an option for interested students to begin a Certificate II in Community Services (Childcare).

After completing this one year course most students will enter the workforce or TAFE studies. However, students who wish to continue will be able to access a Target course or another VET course at Year 12 level.

As you can see from the list of subjects below the core of the school work is still in the Hospitality area, but under an agreement with South West Regional College students can now gain extra qualifications which will increase not only their employability but also their chances of entering the TAFE course of their choice.

Senior Schooling (Year 11 & 12)

School - Programs

As of 2008 all young people are required to participate in senior schooling, meaningful training (such as TAFE, apprenticeships or traineeships) or meaningful employment until the end of the year they turn 17. If students choose to remain at Busselton Senior High School and continue into Years 11 and 12 they will be exposed to knowledge, skills and values that will assist them in pursuing employment or further training. Students are taught to become lifelong learners and to achieve their potential in their personal and working lives.

TAFE Links

School - Programs

In response to the major changes in education, training and the job market Busselton SHS has introduced a new school program to replace the largely outdated TARGET stream. TAFE LINKS is a 4 day school and 1 day TAFE program which provides students not only with a West Australian Certificate of Education (Secondary Graduation) but also with a training qualification from TAFE.

Students who complete the TAFE Links Course will have a far greater chance to enter popular TAFE courses beyond Year 12 and also have enhanced employment prospects. Students in this course will be under the care of a designated co-ordinator who will be available to look after the whole range of their pastoral care needs.
